Ashley Pharoah's 2 hour adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic was shown on ITV1 on Boxing Day 2005 at 9pm. In this moving and humorous romance, a school teacher named Fancy Day (Keeley Hawes), moves to the village of Mellstock and causes havoc by catching the eye of the parson (Ben Miles), a rich landowner (Steve Pemberton) and a poor, but handsome, labourer Dick Dewey, played by James Murray. These relationships are charted through four seasons, from their meeting in winter to an eventual marriage, under a greenwood tree, in autumn.
